How to know if your blood pressure medicine is really working
If you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure, your doctor will devise a treatment plan that will have involve changes to your lifestyle — eating a heart-healthy diet, increasing your level of physical activity, learning how to manage stress, and maintaining a healthy weight. A big part of your treatment plan may involve the use of one or more medications to keep your blood pressure at a healthy level of less than 140/90 mm Hg.
Your doctor may prescribe a combination of medicines to control your blood pressure based upon how high you’re blood pressure is, the cause of your high blood pressure, and any health problems you may be currently experiencing.
In order to know if your blood pressure medicine is really working, you need to monitor your blood pressure levels twice a day — morning and late afternoon–at about the same time every day. It’s important to keep track of your medications — what they are, the dosages, how and when you’re taking them.
How long your blood pressure medicine takes to work depends on the type of medicine(s) you’re taking. Some are fast-acting while others take several weeks to become therapeutic.
Time will tell
The best medications to control blood pressure are ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers, and thiazide diuretics. Each type of medication works in different ways to lower your blood pressure. It’s not unusual for your doctor to try several different medicines or doses in order to find what works the best for your situation.
Being able to measure your blood pressure from home is the best way to measure improvement and for you and your physician to know whether or not your treatment plan is working for you. Taking regular and accurate blood pressure readings can help your doctor monitor your treatment program and make adjustments if and when necessary.
